Fertilization is one of the most important and one of the most neglected aspects of tree care. Trees require certain nutrients to function and grow. Urban landscape trees are often growing in soils that do not contain sufficient nutrients for satisfactory growth and development. Plus, in our urban environments, the vast areas of concrete and grass immediately surrounding trees hinders their ability to absorb water, oxygen and other nutrients, often compromising tree health. Deep root fertilization gets the nutrients down where the trees can use them.
Tree Fertilizer Is Formulated for Trees, Not Grass
Even if lawn fertilizer could make it down to the tree roots, it isn’t the best type of nutrients for trees. Trees are forest organisms, which means they have a more intimate relationship with the fungal organisms within the soil than with the bacterial organisms that grasses rely on. Our mix of tree fertilizer focuses on that fungal relationship. When we apply deep root fertilizer, we focus on organics – especially humates. Humates, which are composed of various forms of carbon, are naturally occurring material that is very rich in humified organic matter and humic substances. Humates are now recognized as the single most productive input in sustainable agriculture. By adding organic material to the soil along with macro and micro nutrients, we help soil structure and ultimately make the nutrients already in the soil more readily available to your trees and shrubs.
Benefits of Deep Root Fertilization
Healthy trees and shrubs begin with a healthy living soil. When you have your trees fertilized through deep root fertilization, you can expect them to deal better with drought and insect stress. You can also expect healthy sustainable growth not necessarily vigorous growth, which is important because vigorous growth may not be sustainable in an urban environment.
What You Can Do to Ensure Healthy Trees
Watering your trees will give you the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to keeping them healthy. Once a month, you should apply a minimum of three inches of water under the entire drip line of each tree at a rate that there is no runoff. Your sprinkler will not provide enough water for your trees under the current watering restrictions. Remember that drip irrigation, soaker hoses and devices like the bullseye watering mat are exempt from the watering restrictions.
Deep root fertilization gives trees the opportunity to not only survive but also flourish in our urban environment. If your trees could use a little TLC, and we’re pretty sure they could, give the tree experts at Ashton Walden Turf Services a call at (806) 632-3571 or schedule an appointment online for deep root fertilization.
