Heartworm
This is one of the leading diseases in cats and dogs. It’s a serious disease that results in severe lung disease, heart failure, organ damage, and death. It is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis. And – you guessed it – it’s spread through mosquito bites. The worms are called “heartworms” because the adults live in an infected animal’s heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. It’s excruciating and expensive to treat.
