These Are The Dangerous Diseases Mosquitoes Are Carrying

There are so many things that people disagree on: politics, religion, which baseball team to root for. But if there’s one thing we can ALL agree on, it’s mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are, without a doubt, the absolute worst bug on the planet. Their bites cause immediate problems and potentially long-term problems for our health. The bites are itchy, but they will eventually go away. Some diseases, however, can last for quite a while. Here are just a few of the diseases that mosquitoes carry – and how you can protect yourself with mosquito control treatment.

Some mosquito-borne diseases can harm not only us but our pets too. As the climate warms and tropical mosquitoes from South America migrate north, we may see diseases like Zika and yellow fever become the new norm here in North America. That being said, let’s take a look at a few diseases already on our shores.

West Nile Virus

West Nile virus symptoms present like a bad case of the flu, including things like headache, fever, body or muscle aches, and even a mild rash. Some patients are fortunate enough to experience no symptoms whatsoever. While you may think you’re in the clear, being asymptomatic could actually give you a false sense of security. That’s because West Nile could develop a more severe form of the virus known as neuroinvasive disease or WNND. The symptoms of WNND are far more serious and, in rare circumstances, can be permanent. WNND can lead to encephalitis, meningitis, muscle weakness, or even permanent neurological complications, such as paralysis, memory loss, and sensitivity to light. And unfortunately, there is no cure for the West Nile virus. So if you’re tempted to roll the dice with West Nile, you may want to rethink that. A pest control application for your yard could save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars in medical expenses down the road.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis

EEEV is rare, but if you are unlucky enough to contract it, you are in for a world of hurt. It’s becoming more and more of a problem, and children are the most vulnerable to the most severe form of the disease. And it can infect not only humans but also horses and birds. To make matters worse, you may not notice symptoms for four to 10 days. Like WNND, EEEV infection can cause neurologic diseases like meningitis or encephalitis. Most people have symptoms like fever, chills, malaise, arthralgia, and myalgia. The illness lasts one to two weeks, and most people recover completely. There is one catch: if it gets to your nervous system, it may create long-term problems. Signs and symptoms of the neurologic disease include fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, behavioral changes, drowsiness, and coma.

Heartworm

This is one of the leading diseases in cats and dogs. It’s a serious disease that results in severe lung disease, heart failure, organ damage, and death. It is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis. And – you guessed it – it’s spread through mosquito bites. The worms are called “heartworms” because the adults live in an infected animal’s heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. It’s excruciating and expensive to treat. You can protect your pets from this horrific disease with a pest control application.

The best way to prevent mosquitoes is to get rid of them. Period. Bug spray, citronella torches, and other measures only put a band-aid on the problem. DEET and picaridin have been proven to be safe, but they don’t actually get to the root of the issue. These products smell bad, and you have to remember to reapply every few hours. The absolute best way to protect yourself is with a professional mosquito control spray. Ashton Walden will send a pest control service technician to look for “problem areas” on your property. Basically, this is an area that could be a breeding tire holding waterground for momma mosquitoes. Female mosquitoes need to lay their eggs in sources of still water where the eggs can hatch without being disturbed. These include places like:

  • Flower pots
  • Children’s playhouses
  • Buckets
  • Birdbaths
  • Old tires
  • Lawn furniture
  • Rain collectors
  • Clogged gutters
  • Low-lying areas of the property

Many of these places have small nooks and crannies where mosquitoes can hide. Our treatment will target any and all problem areas so you can rest assured and have peace of mind. Our products are safe for children and pets and require just a short period of time to dry. And once it’s dry, your yard will be safe to use again. The protection lasts for many weeks before we have to reapply – it even is effective after a rainstorm.
