Stop Winter Weeds Before They Start: A Fall Pre-Emergent Guide

If you dealt with henbit, dandelions, or chickweed taking over your lawn last winter, the fix isn’t something you do in January. It’s something you do right now. Fall is when winter weeds actually start, even though you won’t see them above ground for weeks or months.

Why Weeds Show Up “Out of Nowhere” in Winter

Winter weeds germinate in the fall while soil temperatures are still warm enough, then sit quietly through the cold months before exploding with growth as soon as temperatures rise in late winter and early spring. By the time you notice them, the window to stop them easily has already closed.

That’s exactly why pre-emergent herbicide has to go down before the weeds germinate, not after.

How Pre-Emergent Actually Works

Pre-emergent doesn’t kill existing weeds. Instead, it creates a barrier in the top layer of soil that stops weed seeds from sprouting in the first place. That’s why timing is everything: applied too late, the weeds have already germinated and the product won’t do much good.

For our area, that means getting pre-emergent down while soil temperatures are still in the right range in the fall, before the first real cold snap.

Common Winter Weeds We See in Lubbock

  • Henbit – purple flowers, spreads fast in cool weather
  • Chickweed – low, dense mats that choke out grass
  • Dandelion – easy to spot, hard to fully eliminate once established
  • Annual bluegrass (Poa annua) – light green patches that stand out against dormant turf

Once these are established, control gets a lot harder and usually means spot-treating through the winter instead of preventing the problem entirely.

Don’t Wait for Weeds to Show Up

The lawns that stay cleanest through winter aren’t the ones getting treated after the fact. They’re the ones that got pre-emergent down at the right time in fall. If your yard has fought the same winter weeds year after year, this is the step that breaks the cycle.
